Myanmar Tariff Rates 2026: 10% on US Imports

Updated 2026-07-24
Effective Rate
10%44%

As of 2026-07-24, US imports from Myanmar carry an effective tariff of about 10%. This combines the 10% Section 301 forced-labor baseline (which replaced Section 122 on July 24, 2026) applied to countries without a separate deal, with Section 232 metals tariffs of 50% on steel and 50% on aluminum charged separately. The rate fell from 44% after the Supreme Court struck down the IEEPA tariffs in February 2026, so importers who paid the higher rate between April 2025 and February 2026 may qualify for refunds. The 10% Section 122 tariff (effective Feb 24, 2026) expired at its 150-day limit on July 24, 2026 and was replaced the same day by the Section 301 forced-labor tariff (10%, or 12.5% for higher-tier economies).

Myanmar Import Tariff Overview

Imports from Myanmar (Burma) carry a 10% base tariff โ€” now the Section 301 forced-labor tariff that replaced the expired Section 122 reciprocal rate on July 24, 2026 โ€” but the headline rate is far less important than the sanctions overlay: extensive OFAC and BIS restrictions imposed after the 2021 military coup block or license-restrict many categories of trade with Myanmar.

The US and Myanmar have no free trade agreement, and Myanmar lost most of its preferential access years ago; it was suspended from GSP in 1989 and never regained AGOA-style benefits. Following the February 2021 coup, the US reimposed and expanded sanctions targeting the military regime (Tatmadaw), state-owned enterprises, gem and timber entities, and designated individuals. As a result, bilateral goods trade is a small fraction of what it once was, and every shipment should be screened against current sanctions and denied-party lists before entry.

Key Products Imported from Myanmar

Historically the main US imports from Myanmar were apparel and garments, followed by agricultural goods (rice, dried beans and pulses), seafood, and โ€” where not blocked โ€” jade, rubies and other gemstones and teak timber. Sanctions now sharply restrict the jade, gemstone, and timber categories, leaving legally importable trade concentrated in lower-value apparel and food products.

Recent Changes

Feb 20, 2026: SCOTUS struck down the IEEPA reciprocal tariffs, removing Myanmar's old 44% IEEPA rate, which was replaced by the 10% Section 122 rate. On July 24, 2026 Section 122 hit its 150-day statutory limit and was replaced the same day by the 10% Section 301 forced-labor tariff. De minimis is eliminated for all countries. The dominant, ongoing change for Myanmar remains the post-2021 sanctions program rather than the reciprocal-tariff regime.

Tips for Importers

Before anything tariff-related, run full OFAC SDN, sectoral, and BIS Entity List screening โ€” jade, gemstones, and timber from Myanmar are broadly prohibited, and dealings with military-linked entities can trigger enforcement. For permitted apparel and food goods, expect heightened CBP scrutiny under the Uyghur/forced-labor enforcement posture; maintain rigorous supply-chain traceability documentation, and confirm HTS classification and country-of-origin evidence to avoid detention.

How Are US Tariffs on Myanmar Imports Calculated?

US import duties on goods from Myanmar are determined by multiple overlapping tariff authorities. The base layer is the 10% Section 301 forced-labor tariff, which replaced the expired 10% Section 122 tariff on July 24, 2026 and applies to most countries without a separate trade deal. Section 232 tariffs of 50% on steel and 50% on aluminum apply to metals imports, regardless of the forced-labor tariff.

To calculate the total duty on a specific import from Myanmar, use our US import duty calculator or landed cost calculator for a complete estimate including Merchandise Processing Fee (MPF) and Harbor Maintenance Fee (HMF). You can also compare Myanmar rates with other countries to evaluate sourcing alternatives.

Already importing from Myanmar? If you paid the higher pre-SCOTUS IEEPA rate in 2025, you may be able to claim an IEEPA tariff refund. And if you re-export or manufacture with imported goods, duty drawback can recover up to 99% of the duties you paid โ€” both are separate from the rates above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a tariff on goods from Myanmar?
Yes. Legally importable goods from Myanmar carry the 10% base tariff โ€” the Section 301 forced-labor tariff that replaced the expired Section 122 rate on July 24, 2026 โ€” plus the normal MFN duty for the product. However, many categories are blocked or license-restricted by US sanctions entirely, so the tariff rate is often not the binding constraint.
How much is US import duty from Myanmar?
For permitted products, the base surcharge is 10% on top of the standard MFN duty (for example, apparel MFN averages around 16.5%, giving a combined burden in the mid-20% range). Section 232 metals are 50% regardless of origin. But importers must first confirm the goods are not subject to OFAC or BIS prohibitions.
Can US companies still import jade, rubies, or teak from Myanmar?
Generally no. US sanctions specifically target Myanmar's gemstone (jade and rubies) and timber (including teak) sectors, which are tied to military-controlled enterprises. These goods are broadly prohibited, and importers should verify the current OFAC restrictions and any licensing requirements before considering any such transaction.
